SUMMER WRAP-UP 2011 Newsletter

Summer 2011 Wrap Up Newsletter It’s hard to believe that only four months ago we were still shedding out and battling the spring winds at our first show in Belen and here we are at State Fair time!!    It has been a great summer for NMPHC and here are some of the highlights. The Green Chile Classic held in July was our biggest show success to date with 37 Paint horses and 146 total Paint entries.  We also had a good number of All Breed Exhibitors with 12 all breed horses.
The weekend kicked off with our traditional Margarita Party, a pot luck affair with plenty of good food.  It was a chance to catch up with old friends and make the acquaintance of some new ones.  We had exhibitors from as far as Texas, Kansas and Arizona.  Thank you to Kim Murusky who donated a goodie basket for the exhibitor that traveled the furthest.
~~~~
We like our shows to have something for everyone!  All the little touches that let exhibitors and support staff alike how important we think you all are!  The 50/50 drawing gives everyone a chance at extra cash.  The Random Prize table has goodies for exhibitors that are randomly drawn during the day.  The added money Halter drawings hopefully inspire people to enter a Paint halter class with perhaps the chance of winning another random drawing.  Our Halter Grand and Reserve Champions are given beautiful neck sashes. And of course we have our Participation Award Program for each show; become a member of NMPHC and every class you enter is a chance to win the award for that show and ultimately a year end Participation award as well.
~~~~
The winds kicked up a bit on Friday night causing Candace Thompson of Farmington to have a small misstep.  Unfortunately she ended up with a very badly injured foot and was not able to show for the weekend.  We’re sorry that you missed your classes Candace.  She managed to keep a smile on her face as she cheered on her posse, the Farmington group.  She did win the 50/50 drawing so at least Candace went home with a little extra cash.  The drawing is something new that we have for 2011.  Tickets are $5 with the drawing held on Sunday; half of the money goes to the club and the other half goes to the winner of the drawing.
 Another incentive drawing added to the 2011 show season was the $100 added money for Paint Halter Mares.  Congratulations to Cindy Cook and Real to Reel on winning the $100!    Classes ran until almost 5:00 on Saturday!  Nice to finish up with a full day and lots of horses!  Even our Longe Line class was a pointed class with 6 entries.
~~~~
On Saturday evening our Youth group had their traditional party.  Serina did a great job of keeping the party going with lots of inspiring and fun games, including some leadership team building activities. Serina donated great prizes for the youth party. Todd Cleveland manned the grill and kept everyone fed with awesome burgers.  There was also Green Chile Stew, thanks again to Kim Murusky for a theme meal for the show!  We also had a paid Trail Warm up on Saturday night.  All proceeds from the warm up go to our Youth.  Trail warm up is a great opportunity to do a little schooling before the Trail classes which are first thing Sunday morning and support our great Youth!
~~~~
It was nice to end our day on Sunday with our high point awards and our Participation Award Drawing.  The Participation awards for the Green Chile Classic were two beautiful English Headstalls very generously donated by our sponsor Paul’s Veterinary Supply on Osuna.  The lucky recipients were Hannah Murusky and Sue Bragg.

On August 6th we had our second annual Garage Sale at Dan’s Boots and Saddles on Fourth Street in Albuquerque.  A very special Thank you to Melanie and Larry from Dan’s  for letting us invade your parking lot!  Dan’s has been a great sponsor for many years and we really appreciate their support.  Thanks also to everyone that contributed to the sale, especially Jennifer Mortus, Glenda Young, Patti Disert, Chris Theiler, Kathy O’Neal, Marilyn Novat, Nancy Creel Unis and Lillian Creel, Charlene Johnson and Bridgette Honea of Bar Lazy J, Dottie Cleveland and Sue Bragg.  We had not only horse tack and household items but toys, books and clothes.
A special thank you to Reed Bruce for donating about 40 brand new stuffed animals; they were a huge hit with the little ones, Melanie even got some for her Toys for Tots program.  We also had some fine consignment show clothes for sale. Dottie, Patti and Sue ran the sale which went from 9 am to 3 pm.  It was a chance to not only make some income for the club but also to do some public relations as well.  There was a table set up with APHA flyers and information as well as a photo board of NMPHC events and members.   We made over $400 at the sale.
There were some items that were left over and these were donated to the Walking in Circles Horse Rescue Thrift store in Edgewood called Hug a Horse.   A huge thank you goes to Berniece Zielke for the amazing job she did in applying for the APHA Clubs of Distinction. Berniece spent hours compiling information and assembling it into a comprehensive well documented account of our clubs activities and good works.  We hope that we are successful in attaining this distinction among APHA Regional Clubs.
New Mexico Horse Council will have their booth set up outside of the Horse Arena during State Fair again this year.
Paint day will be Saturday September 24th.  Be sure to stop to visit.  We will have one of our own Paint horses to meet and greet the crowds as well as members of NMPHC to promote our breed, our parent organization, APHA and our local club.

The Red Chile Fiesta held in August was another successful show at Wrights Arena in Stanley.  Although not as big as the Green Chile Classic the Red Chile Fiesta held its own.  Stronger and better attended than last year’s August show it is clearly building.  It takes a few years for people to recognize a show and its merits.  We know that each year will bring a bigger and better Red Chile Fiesta.
~~~~
Thank you to the New Mexico Palomino Exhibitors Association for joining forces with the New Mexico Paint Horse Club to bring a full slate of Palomino classes to this show.  NMPEA continues to support and promote the Palomino horse in New Mexico.  Not to be out done by the Green Chile Classic we had another outstanding exhibitor party on Friday night of the Red Chile Fiesta.  Featured was an awesome beef brisket prepared by Jennifer Mortus’ dad.  Great barbeque and great sauces, we are hoping he takes our advice and opens a restaurant in the East Mountains!!  ~~~~~
~~~~
The show schedule was basically the same for this show with the Youth Party concluding activities on Saturday evening.  Our Youth President Serina was not able to attend this show so our second in command Hannah stepped in to lead.  She did a great job having learned much no doubt working with Serina on other youth activities.  They played games and enjoyed the evening while trail warm up took place.  In keeping with the New Mexico theme there was an unbelievable Posole made by Kim Murusky.  Thank you again to Kim for making it a special evening!!
~~~~
Walking in Circles Horse Rescue of Edgewood had a booth at the show to raise awareness for their cause.  They also had crafts to sell.  They are a worthwhile cause that continue to do good works in New Mexico for the Horse Community. The winner of the Participation award for August was Marilyn Novat.  Paul’s Veterinary Supply on Osuna in Albuquerque donated a beautiful Western head stall for the show.  Congratulations to Marilyn.  Thank you so much David for supporting our organization!   Ron Morris won the 50/50 drawing this time.  Our $100 added money Paint Gelding winner was Judy Parsons.
NMPHC kicked off the show season for 2011 with a well attended show held on April 17th at the Valencia County Horseman’s Arena in Belen New Mexico.  Our judge for the event was Martha Sayles.  Thank you to Martha for not only coming to judge our show but for always providing constructive comments to our exhibitors.  We also had apprentice judge Lindsey Berbee at our show.
~~~~
Our list of volunteers includes Jim Sells and Dottie Cleveland helping at the Paddock, ring stewards were Lynn Saunders and Reid Bruce.   The success of any show hinges on the efforts of the Show Manager and his team so a big Thanks John Bloomberg for working so hard to make it a smooth running show and to our wonderful office team Nancy Creel Unis and Lillian Creel.  Also thanks to Kathy Niebert for her usual awesome announcing!  Ron Morris and Berniece Zielke provided Pattern books which were for sale in the office and a real bargain for $1.00!!  Thanks also to all the behind the scenes help from friends, spouses and significant others.

The Participation Award for the April Show was a beautiful Show Halter sponsored by Marilyn Novat.  Kim Murusky was the lucky recipient!  Congratulations Kim we’ll look forward to seeing that on Badger at the next show!   Our Participation program is a little different for 2011 as we will not only have a drawing at year end for one prize but will have an award for each show as well.  The rules are simple, join the New Mexico Paint Horse Club and each class that you enter puts you in the running for the award!  You can join in advance or at the show.  Also our Poker Hank winner was Robyn Koershner!  The details on both programs can be found on our web site.   For those of you that are not aware NMPHC now has a Facebook page.  Kim and Ferol Murusky have started the page and we invite you all to be friends!!  As we know Facebook and social media is the cool new way to communicate with friends and community.  We invite your participation via comments, photos etc.

Thanks to our Clubs of Distinction committee, Berniece Zielke and Karen Kennicott.  APHA has a classification for a regional club which is called Clubs of Distinction.  It is an application process that runs from June 1st to May 31st

Coming Attraction for this summer will be our Second Annual Garage Sale on Saturday August 6th.  Thanks to Dan’s Boots and Saddles on Fourth St.  They are letting us have the event there again this year.  Last year the club made around $300, we hope to double that amount for this year!!  Last year we also donated the remaining items to Joy Junction.  So here is our all call for whatever you can donate to the sale.  We will be happy to come collect whatever items you have and remember it can be anything from tack to clothes to household items, tools, toys, etc.  One of our hottest items last year was Peacock Feathers that Patty Disert donated!!  So it doesn’t matter what it is, remember one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  We have two months to gather items for the sale.  If you have something you would like to donate contact Sue Bragg at sbragg41@att.net or call her at 505-307-8876, our Garage Sale Coordinator!  Or haul it to the next show.
~~~~~
Hope you all are getting geared up for our next show, the Green Chile Classic in July.  We will have our traditional Friday evening exhibitor party which is always lots of fun.  The trail warm up has been a big hit so we will have that again as well on Saturday evening with the proceeds going to our Youth Group.   On a very sad note the horse community has lost a much loved member, Nola Gearhardt of Tijeras New Mexico.  Nola passed away recently from injuries sustained in a fall this winter.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the Gearhardt and Carey families in this very tragic loss.
Thanks, Sue Bragg
SPRING NEWSLETTER
Welcome Spring! I think man and horse alike are all looking forward t
o the warmer weather coming up and of course, the upcoming show season! First of all, I would like to introduce the new members of board this year and thank them for joining us. We hope this year is the best one ever! Kathy O'Neal, owner and trainer at Livery Training Stable, is our President this year. She has a lot of great ideas and is very motivated and already been a strong leader to the club.
John Blomberg is our 2nd Vice President and show manager. John and his wife Jennifer have been showing with us for a number of years, and we are very pleased that he joined our board. He has already been very hard at work getting all of our shows set up and ready to roll. And a big thanks to Jennifer assisting him in all of behind the scene details.
Our new board members are Sabrina Pack, Karen Kennicott & Ferol Murusky. These awesome people are parents to three of our youth members, so we get a lot of input from these folks from the youth standpoint as well as general help. Sabrina is also our youth advisor and works on keeping our website running. She, along with her husband Dave and Serina have been a HUGE help with our club the past few years. We thank you and are glad to have you on our board. Karen, is also involved heavily in the youth club. Her daughter Colleen has been showing with us for some time, and this year Karen will be horseback as well. Thank you Karen for all you have already done! Ferol and his family are from the four corners area, and have been showing with us for quite sometime as well. They have gotten our facebook page up and running, high tech here we come. We want to thank all of these folks for all your time and effort. It takes a good team effort to make this thing run, and we have a GREAT one!
We kicked off our season with a training show on March 13th, in Belen. It was a little windy but not too bad. We had a large group from the Sante Fe area come down and show with us, and other new faces as well. It was nice to see all of you and hope you will come and join us at our other shows. Our next show is an approved paint and all breed show. It will be April 17th, in Belen at the Horseman's arena. Martha Sayles will be judging. We will have a large amount of 4-H classes, with discounts for those 4-Her's who bring their certificates. Other approved dates are July 16 & 17, August 20 & 21, and the state fair date will be the first Monday of the fair. We will run a full slate of all breed classes in July & August. The Palomino club will be joining us with classes in August. There will be trail warm-ups again this year with all the proceeds going to the youth. New this year will be our poker run classes. Five classes will be chosen, each paid poker run player will be issued a card in each of the designated classes and the person with the best hand wins the pot! All the rules will be posted on the website and at the shows.
We will be doing our participation awards this year, but are doing something slightly different. We are going to have a participation award for each approved show, excluding the fair. Then one larger award to be given at the year end banquet. Each exhibitor will be given a raffle ticket for each paid entry, they will fill it out and return it to the office and a winner will be drawn at the end of each show. All the tickets from each show will then go into one big pot and one winner will be drawn at the year end banquet.
Just a reminder too, all are welcome to attend our monthly board meetings. They are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Embassy Suites on I-40 and Lomas at 6:30pm. We will be posting the dates of the upcoming meetings on the home page. Please feel free to come have a good meal and let us know your thoughts, comments, suggestions or concerns. We would love to have your input.
Happy Trails!
Dottie Cleveland
